As palavras negativas não são traduzidas para a língua materna

Ao lerem, as pessoas multilingues traduzem inconscientemente para a sua língua materna. Isto acontece de uma forma automática, de tal modo que os leitores nem se apercebem disso. Poder-se-ia dizer que o cérebro funciona como um tradutor simultâneo. Mas que não traduz tudo! Num estudo ficou demonstrado que o cérebro tem um filtro incorporado. Este filtro determina aquilo que será traduzido. E parece que o filtro ignora determinadas palavras. As palavras negativas não são traduzidas para a língua materna. Investigadores realizaram uma experiência com falantes nativos de chinês. Todos os indivíduos falavam inglês como língua segunda. Durante o teste, estes indivíduos tinham que avaliar várias palavras inglesas. Estas palavras tinham diferentes conteúdos emocionais. Havia conceitos positivos, negativos e neutros. O seu cérebro foi investigado enquanto eles liam estas palavras. Ou seja, os investigadores mediram a atividade elétrica do cérebro. E, deste modo, puderam constatar o modo como o cérebro trabalhava. Certos sinais foram produzidos durante a tradução das palavras. Estes sinais indicam que o cérebro se encontra ativo. No caso das palavras negativas, os indivíduos não evidenciaram qualquer atividade. Apenas os conceitos positivos ou neutros foram traduzidos. Os investigadores desconhecem ainda por que motivo isto acontece. Teoricamente, o cérebro devia processar todas as palavras da mesma forma. Mas pode ser que o filtro examine previamente cada palavra. Mesmo quando se lê numa língua segunda, esta análise mantém-se. Em se tratando de uma palavra negativa, a memória é bloqueada. E, desta maneira, não se pode pensar na língua materna. As pessoas podem ser muito sensíveis às palavras. Talvez o nosso cérebro nos queira proteger de algum tipo de choque emocional...
